Darren began his career as a trainee with Leeds United and was released in the summer of 1986.
He then played soccer in the Manchester Amateur Leagues before joining Maine Road in the North West Counties League before signing for Winsford United in the summer of 1992 in the HFS Loans League Premier Division.
After an outstanding season he was snapped up by Barnsley and stayed at Oakwell for six years making 197 appearances for the Tykes and scoring seven goals. During some of this time the team were playing in the Premiership. In the summer of 1999 he joined Wigan Athletic and in two seasons with the Latics he made 71 appearances scoring four times.
He made the short trip to Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2001, where in three seasons he played 110 games scoring three times. He was released in the summer of 2004 and headed north to join Clyde in the Scottish First Division. In his only season at Broadwood he made 36 appearances scoring twice.
He joined another Scottish First Division side, St Johnstone in the summer of 2005 and won several "Player of the Year" awards during his first season with the club. He was released at the end of December 2006 having played 55 games for The Saints without scoring.
He joined Barrow in January 2007 and made his debut against Gainsborough Trinity at Holker Street. He scored his first goal for the club in April 2007 in the 1-0 home win over Hinckley United that secured the club's Nationwide North place for next season. The goal won the club's "Goal of the Season" award.
Darren was one of the caretaker management team appointed in November 2007 and one month later was appointed a joint manager with David Bayliss on a permanent basis. He was the joint winner of the Blue Square North "Manager of the Month" award in March 2008 and along with Bayliss led the Bluebirds to a Wembley Victory in the 2009/10 FA Trophy.
